Holy Smoke, Cheers, and Goosebumps!

Go team go! Football season is here! These days I'm the cheerleader for my youngest son Nick who is plays football (tight end) for the University of Louisiana in Lafayette. Geaux Ragin Cajuns!

I'm also the cheerleader for my older son Jake who has a new book released from Harvest House Publishers - First and Goal - What Football Taught Me About Never Giving Up. Jake is a type one diabetic who played (also as a tight end) for the Wisconsin Badgers. He then went on to the NFL and played for the Saints, Texans, Chiefs and Chargers.

Jake #81 San Diego Chargers
First and Goal is a book that will inspire many and be enjoyed by all, not only football fans. Here's an excerpt from Jake's A-Z football devotional...C is for Cheerleader!
from MorgueFile
Cheerleader: An athlete who performs routines on the sidelines that involve tumbling, dancing, jumping, and executing stunts to inspire fans to cheer for their team.
At a play-off game with the Chargers, goose bumps ran down my arms as I rushed through the smoke-filled tunnel onto the field. The energy and voices of 70,000 thousand screaming fans can turn even a veteran player's determined squint into the wide eyes of a child on Christmas morning.
While the cheerleaders performed and urged on the crowd, running back Danny Woodhead turned to me. "Can you believe we get to do this?"
When he opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.  And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them. Another angel, who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all God's people, on the golden altar that is before the throne.  The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of God's people, went up before God from the angel's hand. Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake (Revelation 8:1-5).
This scene in heaven from the book of Revelation sounds like the field before the game--the calm before the storm and then the smoke of incense, peals of thunder, rumbling from the crowd, and flashes of light. But this vivid image from heaven is greater and much more profound, for sure like nothing Danny or I have yet to see.
I'm humbled when fans and cheerleaders yell their hearts out for the team. How much more amazing when saints, angels, and even loved ones who have passed on pray and cheer for us before the throne of God.
Psalm 91:11 says, "He will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways." Angels are assigned to watch over us. The Bible tells us God sends them to earth as messengers and caretakers. They are our cheerleaders who go before God, along with the saints, whom the Bible names as intercessors before Him.
In pursuing your dreams, you may not have 70,000 thousand fans cheering in the stands, yet in heaven a host of angels, saints, and loved ones cheer you on before God. That's pretty cool. And don't be afraid to ask others to pray for you on earth. Those prayers from our earthly cheerleaders, like smoke, travel upward and reach God, who wants you to win.
